Toros GTHL Affiliate

Effective October 5, 2015, the Faustina Hockey League is now an affiliate organization with the Toros Hockey Association (formerly known as York Toros Hockey Association).

The Toros Hockey Association, in the GTHL ‘AA’ West Division, does not have a House League or Select program to call associated players from or to recruit from lower hockey tiers. This affiliation will enable Faustina players wishing to play more competitive hockey an opportunity to be Affiliated Players (AP) of the Toros AA teams.

For the 2016-2017 season, the Toros have 4 –‘AA’ teams – Minor Atom, Minor Peewee,  Bantam & Minor Midget. As a recognized affiliate organization, Faustina Select players are eligible in 2016-2017 to play for the Toros Minor Atom, Minor Peewee and Bantam divisions as AP’s when needed.

As an ongoing agreement between the two hockey organizations, Faustina Select players seeking more competitive hockey beyond Select will be encouraged to move into  the Toros‘AA’ hockey organization. This affiliation between Faustina and the Toros will provide children in the Etobicoke & Weston areas of Toronto with a great hockey experience enabling them to develop their hockey skills and progress to play more competitive hockey.

Toros Hockey Association
The York Toros Hockey Association was founded in 1974 by a small group of community members. This group of individuals was interested in providing a place for children between the ages of nine and eighteen to play competitive hockey in the Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League (M.T.H.L.).

At the time, the inner-city community in the Borough of York had only one organization fielding a team in the M.T.H.L. Many of the young hockey players with enough talent to participate in the M.T.H.L. were turned away because there were only so many positions available on a team. The community felt that their kids should have the opportunity to play hockey, and so the York Toros were born. The Association was granted the use of the “Toros” name and logo by the Toronto Toros professional hockey team (of the now disbanded World Hockey Association) and in September of 1974 the York Toros suited up four new teams in the M.T.H.L.

The organization’s mission statement is Improve a person’s ability to play hockey. Generate community spirit. Promote sportsmanship. Words that capture our goal in this community and what we have strived to achieve for more than thirty years. Every player, coach, executive and parent in this organization are aware of it, and attempt to live up to these expectations as members of the Toros.

The people who volunteer to make this organization operate consist of the executive, coaches and many parents from each of the teams. There are usually two to three coaches and a trainer on each of the teams. The Toros take on the responsibility and expenses to ensure that our coaches are properly certified and that each of the trainers has taken a first aid course.
It is these initiatives that place the Toros Hockey Association ahead of others, attempting to provide a safe, experienced, dedicated and fun environment for the youth of our community to learn and develop their skills and appreciation for the game of hockey, commitment to fair play and growth of defining an individual through the competitiveness and team spirit of sport.

Faustina Hockey League

The Faustina Sports Club provides minor hockey in the south Etobicoke area and are proud tenants of the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence. Faustina offers players opportunities to play both House League and Select hockey.  The Faustina Sports Club is celebrating their 80th Anniversary this year.

The House League plays all games on Saturdays at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, 400 Kipling Ave, Toronto – just north of Lakeshore Boulevard.  Select teams from Tyke through Midget Sr. are formed from House League players who are interested in playing a more competitive level hockey.

Ken Cox founded Faustina in 1935 with the help of seven other local young men.  The Faustina Sports Club’s main objective was to raise money for charitable purposes. The club was re-organized in 1947 after being interrupted by World War ll. Membership was expanded and the club dedicated themselves to the promotion of minor hockey in the Lakeshore area.

In 1951, the Lakeshore Memorial Arena was built and the Faustina Hockey League became the first occupant providing affordable hockey for young people in the Etobicoke Lakeshore area.  From 1951 to this day over 25,000 hockey players have passed through Faustina Minor Hockey.  After completion of the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, Faustina Hockey moved hockey operations to this facility.
